Education can be credited to play a very important role in the development of Gujarat as a State in every sphere. Gujarat’s education sector has witnessed a sea of change with the literacy rate increasing from 69.14 % in 2001 to 79.31% in 2011. Another very impressive fact is that the female literacy rate has gone up by 12.93% in the last decade. All this can be credited to the new and improved initiatives undertaken by the Education Department of the State so as to inculcate in its people the importance for education.
Narendra Modi’s Government has also undertaken an initiative called “Gunotsav” under which primary schools are evaluated. This exercise is undertaken annually, and 3,000 officers and ministers from all Government Departments visit schools and thereafter spend an entire day there to examine the teaching conditions and furnish a report.

Primary Education in Gujarat
Narendra Modi’s Gujarat has more than 32,700 panchayat as well as grant-aid primary schools. Over the last 10 years 80,750 classrooms have been constructed and the state boasts of 100% drinking water facility in its primary schools. Along with this, sanitation in schools is also given a lot of importance and for this 62,000 new toilet blocks have been constructed and compound walls have been constructed in 18,513 schools to ensure safety. Another impressive initiative undertaken by the Modi government is to ensure electricity in primary schools. Gujarat has 100% electrification in all its government run schools and the achievement does not end here, all the expenditure on power is borne by the state government.
Infrastructure upgradation in Gujarat has been supported by enrolment drives undertaken by the State such as Shaala Praveshotsav and Kanya Kelavani Rathyatra. Apart from this to encourage education of the girl child, in 2003, the Vidhyalakshmi Bonds were introduced. Through this initiative for every Below Poverty Line (BPL) girl child who is enrolled in a school, bonds worth Rs. 2000 are given.

Secondary Education in Gujarat
The total number of government run secondary schools in Gujarat has increased from 140 in 2001 to 744 in 2011. Narendra Modi’s Government has introduced some effective initiatives which have enhanced the quality of secondary education in the State. These are introduction of comprehensive and continuous evaluation, introduction of semester system from class 9, change in pattern of Board examination among many others. Incidentally, Gujarat as a State has chosen not to abolish Class 10 Board exams. However, it has made the exam rote-free so as to evaluate students’ understanding of the subject.
Gujarat has also introduced an initiative which is of great help to students who have adopted an unconventional route to higher secondary school. This initiative allows diploma students from Industrial Training Institutes (I.T.I) to seek admissions in any of the graduate degree courses. The Government has announced a major policy of declaring equivalence of ITI with SSC and HSC.
Higher Education in Gujarat
Gujarat has witnessed an impressive increase in the total number of Universities which is from a mere 11 in 2001 to about 45 in 2011. Narendra Modi’s Gujarat boasts of having more than 9 lakh students pursuing college education. The number of students who are applying for technical courses such as engineering has also seen a significant rise. Assessing this demand, Modi’s Government has increased the number of seats in the Government Engineering Colleges. Total number of seats in professional colleges have seen a rise from 22,475 to 1,38,740 in the last decade. Also the seats in Government and Grant-in-aid colleges have increased from 13,470 to 33,955 for the same time duration. Students belonging to Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) are given 5% reservation in engineering and pharmacy courses. Tuition fee is waived off for students who have secured admission in a technical course through merit and who belong to families having an annual income lesser than Rs. 2.5 lakh or who are handicapped. The State has provided free education to more than 24,700 students under this scheme.
In order to increase knowledge levels of English language among Gujarati youth, the State Government has introduced the Society for Creation of Opportunity through Proficiency in English (SCOPE) program. Through this initiative more than 2 lakh students in Gujarat have acquired proficiency in English.
The Narendra Modi Government has in a very impressive fashion offered support to students in every step of their academic endeavours. Be it the school enrolment incentives or providing adequate training to teachers on the latest curriculum and latest pedagogical practices. The Gujarat Government has never shied away from enhancing the quality of education in the State and the benefits of undertaking these impressive initiatives is openly visible in the development story of the State.
